St. Patrick's Day Thoughts

This one has been sitting for awhile waiting to be posted, so while I had a few moments to spare I thought I'd get it up for your reading pleasure:

March 17th 2009

Greetings My Dear Readers,

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

It's been awhile since I actually posted anything, so I thought I might sit down and tap out a few lines.

As many of you may know I am Canadian and as such I have sat back and watched while the Canadian Government has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into its preparations for hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia while in the meantime the economy is faltering around us, Health Care,  Education and Social Programs are falling apart and we have entire families living on the streets of our major cities because they can't afford the local housing.

Canada has hosted the Olympics on a couple other occasions: 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta and 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec.  Every City that has ever hosted the Olympic Games with rare exception (Calgary being one of the few) has carried Massive Debt as a result for years after.

Although I fully understand the honour of hosting a world class event such as the Olympics, what I'll never understand is how we can pump hundreds of Millions of Dollars into it, while our populations most needy suffer.  Children are going to bed hungry in almost every community, in a sad new growing trend, perhaps spurred by our failing economy, more and more families are losing their homes and being forced to live in their vehicles, in our larger centres many families are simply being forced to live on the streets, daycare funding nationwide is drying up, education and social programs are dying and our government is pumping Hundreds of Millions of dollars into hosting the world at these games instead of into programs where it is most needed.

Granted, my thought processes have always been a little different from most of society, but as far as I'm concerned as wonderful as hosting the Olympic Games is, I honesty believe we should never have agreed to host them.  How can we host the world when we're falling apart internally?  Clearly our national priorities are totally screwed up.  I mean how do you justify spending hundreds of millions on a sporting event while small children go hungry?  How do we pump our resources into preparations to pamper the world when our own citizens are dying in emergency waiting rooms  because they're aren't enough doctors?

How do our politicians sleep at night?  Or maybe I'm just an abnomally, cursed with a conscience and the ability to look ahead and think for myself.  Sometimes I   think it would be nice to be one of these blinder wearing,  party line toting, mindless sheep but alas, thats just not me.

But until next time, I thought you might enjoy this little live cam link I stumbled across:
